Principal Investigator Milene Gil é Conservadora-restauradora de pinturas murais e Investigadora auxiliar do Laboratório HERCULES, In2Past e da CityU Macau Catedra da Universidade de Évora, Portugal. Possui Doutoramento em Conservação e Restauro do Patrimônio Cultural, na especialidade Teoria, História e Técnicas de Produção Artística pela FCT/UNL, Pós-Graduação em Química aplicada ao Património Cultural pela FC/UNL e Pós-Doutorado de 6 anos em Ciências do Patrimônio Cultural pela UÉ. M.Gil tem mais de 20 anos de experiência na área da pintura mural em Portugal e no estrangeiro.

Co-PI Antonio Candeias é Químico especializado em química de superfícies e ciências do patrimônio. Professor da Universidade de Évora desde 1992, foi diretor do Laboratório HERCULES desde a sua criação em janeiro de 2009 até fevereiro de 2019. Atualmente é Vice-Reitor de Investigação e Desenvolvimento e Diretor do Instituto de Investigação e Formação Avançada da Universidade de Évora, Diretor da infraestrutura nacional ERIHS.pt (plataforma portuguesa da European Infrastructure in Heritage Sciences) e Presidente da Cátedra CityUMacau em “Sustainable Heritage”.

Ana Catarina Pinheiro is a pharmacist and conservator-restorer with a PhD in Conservation Science. She works as a researcher at the HERCULES Laboratory at Évora University under a contract with the Foundation for Science and Technology. Her focus is on improving the working conditions and risk assessment for conservators-restorers, as well as promoting sustainability in their practices. Catarina is also passionate about science communication, particularly to students and the general public. She has experience in educational programs and has created engaging animated content to make science more accessible, especially to younger audiences. Currently, she co-coordinates scientific activities in schools and manages scientific communication through social media at HERCULES.

Ana Margarida Cardoso holds a Master in Materials Engineering. She interned at the José de Figueiredo Laboratory and Conservation Institute (LJF) under the Public Administration Internship Program in 2006. Since then she has collaborated in several projects funded by FCT in Portugal, at the LJF and HERCULES Laboratory, with a special focus on characterization of materials through vibrational spectroscopy and microscopic techniques.

 

Ana Manhita is a Chemist and Assistant Researcher at HERCULES Laboratory, University of Évora, Portugal. She completed her PhD in Chemistry in 2012, focused on the material study of historical textiles. She mainly develops her research in the field of analytical chemistry applied to the study of cultural heritage objects, with special emphasis on the application of advanced chromatographic techniques for the study of organic materials.

Carlo Bottaini is an archaeologist. He completed his PhD at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) in 2013. He is currently a researcher at HERCULES Lab, and he is a member of the CityUMacau Chair in Sustainable Heritage (University of Évora). Much of his research is concerned with exploring the dynamics of societal change in later prehistory of Western Europe and Mediterranean through the analysis of material culture and technologies.

Catarina Miguel holds a PhD in Conservation Sciences from Universidade Nova de Lisboa and a degree in Chemical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. She is an integrated member of the HERCULES Laboratory from the University of Évora and Assistant Researcher in the same University. Specialist in vibrational spectroscopy, for the past fifteen years she has dedicated herself to the study of materials and techniques for producing illuminated manuscripts.

Cristina Barrocas Dias is an Associate Professor and Deputy-Director of the HERCULES Laboratory, University of Évora. Her research expertise lies in the analysis of organic compounds by hyphenated chromatographic methods (LC-MS and GC-MS). Recently she has expanded her interests into the analysis of stable isotopes applied to cultural heritage.

José Saias is an Assistant Professor at the Computer Science Department of Universidade de Évora, in Portugal. He holds a PhD in computer science (on natural language processing and question answering systems, in 2010) from University of Évora, at the same institution where he graduated in informatics engineering in 2001, and where he got an informatics engineering Master degree in 2003.
His research interests include artificial intelligence, multimodal interaction and opinion mining.

Luis Dias é Luís Dias é doutorado em Bioquímica pela Universidade de Évora. Atualmente é investigador contratado pela Universidade de Évora e membro do Conselho Científico do Laboratório HERCULES. Desde 2011, tem se dedicado ao estudo de materiais do Património Cultural. Possui extensa experiência na caracterização de materiais recorrendo a tecnologia de ponta, nomeadamente microscopia eletrónica de varrimento, fluorescência de raios-X e difração de raio-X.

Mafalda Costa is a Geologist and a Researcher in the HERCULES Laboratory (University of Évora). Since 2014, she has been working in the field of archaeometry, using analytical techniques to determine the chemical and mineralogical composition of a wide range of inorganic materials recovered from Cultural Heritage.

Maria Gabriela de Carvalho is responsible for the José de Figueiredo Laboratory of the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage (DGPC-IJF). As a Conservator-Restorer, she regularly represents the institution in various meetings, conferences and congresses, both in Portugal and abroad, in the context of conservation problems and awareness on the principles of preventive conservation. She participates as a trainer and speaker in several actions, lectures and communications in schools, universities, associations and entities responsible for safeguarding cultural assets. In the Portuguese Museum Network, she coordinates the training needs in the Conservation area.

Maria Irene Frazão is an Mural Paintings conservator since 1985, having worked in Institute of José de Figueiredo and presently working at the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, in the Department of Study, Works and Inspection (DGPC-DEPO).

Mariana Pinto dos Santos, Art Historian and independent curator, holds a PhD in History and Theory from the Facultat de Belles Arts - Universitat de Barcelona. She is a researcher at the Art History Institute, NOVA FCSH, where she coordinates the Theory of Art, Historiography and Criticism Group. She is also a co-editor of the Literary Work of Almada Negreiros. She was the curator, among others, of the exhibition José de Almada Negreiros: a way of being modern, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisbon (2017). Furthermore, she is also co-responsible for the research project Iberian Modernisms and the Primitivist Imaginary ((2018-22) (PTDC / ART-HIS / 29837/2017). She is an editor at Edições do Saguão.

Michele Portela has been a Conservator-Restorer since 1985 (expertise in painting and sculpture) at José de Figueiredo laboratory of the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage (DGPC-IJF).

Sara Charneca is responsible for the Documentation and Archive Service in the Port of Lisbon Administration, APL, S.A . She has a Master's Degree in Documentary Sciences in the area of Document Management; Post-graduation in Archives and in Libraries, by ULHT. She holds a Pre-Bologna Degree in the area of Educational Psychology and Vocational Guidance. As a student, she completed internships in institutions in Portugal and abroad, including the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, Autoritat Portuària de Barcelona and Unilever Jerónimo Martins. She has worked in the dissemination, enhancement and promotion of APL, S.A.'s Cultural Heritage, through exhibitions and guided tours.

Sara Valadas holds a PhD in Applied Chemistry for the study of easel paintings (University of Évora - 2010-2014). She has been carrying out scientific research in Cultural Heritage since 2007, when she joined the scientific team at Laboratório José de Figueiredo. She is currently a Researcher at HERCULES Laboratory and participates in several projects dedicated to works of art, most recently participating in the coordination of the E-RIHS.pt platform and providing international scientific training (Goa and Brazil).
